# 7: Creating a Three State Menu

Using a variation of the CSS Sprites technique, we can create a "three state" menu using only one image per menu item. This reduces the number of requests on your server as well as elminates any "pauses" while moving to a different state like some other techniques can have. This tutorial takes you all the way through the process of creating the / videos / images to the HTML to the CSS.
# 8: CSS Formatting

Being organized and using good formatting in your CSS files can save you lots of time and frustration during your development process and especially during troubleshooting. The multi-line format makes it easy to browse attributes but makes your file vertically very long. The single-line format keeps your file vertically short which is nice for browsing selectors, but it's harder to browse attributes. You can also choose how you want to group your CSS statements. Do you do it by section, like header, content, footer? Or do you do it by types of attributes like typography and layout? Being organized, hierarchical, and using CSS shorthand will go a long way in making you a better CSS coder.
# 9: Starry Night: 3D Background with the Parallax Effect

Using three layers of alpha transparent PNG files, we can can create a pseudo three-dimensional looking background for a web page. This screencast covers how to do that from start to finish. Since Internet Explorer 6 and under do not support alpha transparency in PNG's, this screencase also covers how to create a warning message that will display only in those browsers.
# 10: Fixed Width, Fluid Width & Elastic Width

There are three different types of layouts for websites: Fixed Width, Fluid Width, and Elastic Width. In this screencast we look at all these three varieties of sites out on the web as well as some hybrid sites and other techniques for making use of wider browser windows. True "fixed width" sites will be a thing of the past when the modern browsers of today take hold in greater numbers. Opera 9, Firefox 3, and IE 8 all have "zoom" abilities, which make fixed width sites behave like elastic width sites. At the end of the screencast I show a very simple example of you you can get started with all three types.
# 11: Working Modularly with PHP

Many sites do not use any fancy Content Managment System (CMS) to generate their pages, they are just just good ol 'static HTML content. A site for your grandmothers pie baking business probably only has a few pages, perhaps a homepage, about page, and contact page. Each of these pages has different main content, but much of it stays exactly the same, like the header, navigation, and footer. Think of these sections as "modules" that you can easily use PHP to insert into the page. This way, making changes to those sections changes all the pages at the same time, saving you time and potentially mistakes. At the end, I show you how you can still achieve unique effects in your navigation despite the code being identical.
# 12: Converting a Photoshop Mockup: Part Two, Episode One

Every website is different will require different conversion techniques so there will be plenty to learn this time around that will be different from last time. The mockup we will be using here is a mini-version of the current version of CSS-Tricks itself!
# 13: Converting a Photoshop Mockup: Part Two, Episode Two

In Episode Two of this series, we continue on with the structure of the site. In Photoshop, we create the three different states of the menu, then slice them up and use the CSS sprites technique to create the rollover and "on" states for the tabs. We then create the main content area and footer.

Firebug is an essential Firefox extension for web designers and developers. You are able to quickly target any element on a page to see the markup, the CSS, the layout, and the DOM in an instant. Not only can you see all of this juicy information, you can edit and see the results directly in the browser window. This makes Firebug the go-to tool for debugging CSS trouble. Also indispensable for Javascript programmers.

# 17: Sliding Doors Button

While sliding doors is far from a new concept and will be obsoleted once we see wider support for multiple backgrounds (CSS3), it is still a good one for your bag-of-tricks. The theory is that if we have an extra hook in our markup, we can apply two overlapping background / videos / images to a single spot of text. When that text grows or shrinks, these overlapping / videos / images and reveal more of themselves creating the illusion it is a single expandable graphic. In this screencast we do a quickly example of how this can work for a button.

That is the Pen Tool and using it to hand-draw clipping paths. There are a variety of ways to make selections in Photoshop, but drawing a real vector path is the most tried-and-true and highest quality way to do so. Mastering this tool will make you a better designer and help unleash your creative potential.
# 23: Conditional Stylesheets

Internet Explorer provides a way to target CSS styling information specifically for its different versions. These "conditional stylesheets" are the best way to handle CSS problems that pop up with your page in IE. They aren't "hacks" (which are liable to cause problems with new browsers down the road), they are perfectly valid code. Just be careful not to overdo it and make things more complicated for yourself.

Here are FIVE different techniques you can use to create rounded corners for boxes on a website. There are always different ways to do things with CSS and rounded corners is a great example of that. Each of these five techniques has advantages and disadvantages. # 25: Designing for Wordpress: Part One

WordPress is a hugely popular CMS for blogging. The blog section of CSS-Tricks is run on WordPress and I am very happy with it. By popular request, we are going to walk through designing for WordPress. In part one, we will be downloading and installing WordPress. Then we will install the "Starkers" theme by Elliot Jay Stocks to start with a completely fresh slate for our new design. No sense starting with the default theme, it's more trouble than it's worth! In part two, we will go over the theory behind designing for WordPress and how it's much like "working modularly" and actually get started designing. In part three, we will finish up the design and start in with some more advanced functionality.
# 26: Designing for Wordpress: Part Two

We have WordPress installed, now let's really get our hands dirty and start getting WordPress to do what we want it to do. We start by poking around the backend activating some plugins, changing some settings and creating posts / pages. Then we take a look at the Photoshop design and note some of the important aspects. Layout, color palette and font choices are all imporant things to consider as well as the overall feel. WordPress sites don't need to scream "Blog!" Unless you want them to. Then we take a look at the modular nature of a WordPress theme and start altering the markup of the files and writing CSS. In part three, we will continue touching up the design, adding details and content. We may get to the finishing touches of adding the "extra-content" stuff like the Twitter feed, or that might be a part four.
# 27: Designing for Wordpress: Part Three

In part three of this series, we finish up the structure of the site and start diving into the details. The typography is set up, the right sidebar is set up, and the footer if flushed out. Then we use SimplePie to pull in the external RSS feed and jQuery to pull in the "social" stuff. Not exactly WordPress related, but I warned you! Then we look at styling up the rest of the WordPress layout types like Single pages (with comment styling) and Pages. At the end we pop open the design in a bunch of different browsers to see how it holds up.

Anytime anyone asks me about forms, I always mention Wufoo. At work and at home, almost every single form I create I just use Wufoo. It makes form creation so easy it's almost entertaining. PLOT:

First off sources used.....first 15mins and audio our off a special friend ....thank you :) , the rest is made up of
russian cam that was missing mins.
The video on the first 15mins is 100x better but contains a major flicker.....the rest is overcropped and looked a little
washed out and has a few issues.
The audio is not too shabby for cam audio...heard alot worse,but hey it's cam so :P
Worked done......shit loads.The first 15mins needed the angles corrected and resized ..along with all the normal filtering.
The rest of the video ...well needed alot of TLC just to get it watchable :(
Audio we decided not to filter and just synced  to our encoded video......there maybe be some oos but it ain't easy syncing audio
to a talking dog ;-)

If you re like most PC users, you probably got Windows 7 with a new PC or laptop. And if you re like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers. Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo; who all have one thing in common: they don t give you a real Windows 7 installation disc with your purchase. Instead, they bundle what they call a recovery disc (that s if you re lucky otherwise you ll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn t matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows 7 license your computer manufacturer just don t want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows 7 installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows 7, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It s not just a way to get Windows installed, it s also the only way of recovering a borked installation. The Windows 7 DVD has a complete recovery center that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.

Thankfully, Microsoft seems to have realized this problem, and have thankfully made a recovery disc for this purpose. It contains the contents of the Windows 7 DVD s recovery center, as we ve come to refer to it. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows 7, and just serves as a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, one could re-create this installation media with freely-downloadable media from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK kit, a multi-gigabyte download); but it s damn-decent of Microsoft to make this available to Windows users who might not be capable of creating such a thing on their own. You can make your own copy from Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, but now you have an easier alternative.

It s a 143 MB download (165 MiB for the 64-bit version), and in the standard ISO format, ready to burned directly to a CD or DVD. Don t wait until your PC crashes to download a copy! Download and burn your recovery disc today, so that when the time comes, you ll be ready!

What it does: The Windows 7 Recovery Disc can be used to access a system recovery menu, giving you options of using System Restore, Complete PC Backup, automated system repair, and a command-line prompt for manual advanced recovery.

What it doesn t do: You cannot use the Windows 7 Recovery Disc to re-install Windows it only fixes (not replaces!) Windows.

This book was born out of the Deaf Studies Think Tank, a three-day symposium in the summer of 2002 sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Gallaudet Universityâs Provostâs Offi ce, and the Gallaudet Research Institute. The Deaf Studies Think Tank convened twenty scholars to debate, discuss, and explore the issues and implications of the fi eld of Deaf Studies. The Think Tank was scheduled in the three days preceding Deaf Way II, an international celebration of Deaf scholarship, arts, performance, advocacy, and development attended by more than nine thousand people from 121 nations.

We met in the circular Gallaudet University Board Room, designed specifi cally for the visual orientation of signing. Yet we would not remain in that room for the duration of the event. Just after the opening address of the Think Tank, the power went out. We hoped this was nothing more than a blink in the local power grid, but it was no blink: the local grid was asleep. The entire campus was out of power and would remain that way for the following thirty hours. So we made do. Plans changed.

We wandered in the hazy, sweltering heat to the nearby Washburn Art Building, which was bathed in afternoon light and featured a great number of works by Deaf artists from all over the world. In one work by Chuck Baird, welded pipes contorted into handshapes, resembling a language of hieroglyphic copper just out of reach of decipherment. In its own enigmatic way, Bairdâs work, titled fi ngerspelling, seemed to make sense of the blackout. These medusa-like fi ngers pointed in new and unexpected directions. They reminded us that taking an unexpected path may lead to new sights and new insights.

These are the instructions for successfully installing Civilization IV and its' add-ons Warlords and Beyond the Sword. Please read them carefully!

Step 0: Burn the ISO images to DVD's, using a DVD writing program such as Nero or ImgBurn (supplied here as "AppsImgBurnSetupImgBurn_2.5.0.0.exe"), burning them as images, NOT as files added to a compilation - requires 3 DVD's
OR
Mount the images one at a time, as requested by the installation programs, using an ISO mounting application, such as DAEMON Tools (which is provided here as "AppsDAEMON Toolsdaemon4304-lite.exe")

Step 1: Install Civilization IV - file "Civilization IV.iso" (1 ISO image / DVD)

Step 2: Install Civilization IV Warlords add-on - file "Civilization IV Warlords.iso" (1 ISO image / DVD)

Step 3: Install Civilization IV Beyond the Sword add-on - file "Civilization IV Beyond the Sword.iso" (1 ISO image / DVD)

Step 4: Install the Civilization IV Beyond the Sword 3.17 patch (supplied as "PatchCiv4BeyondTheSwordPatch3.17.exe")

Step 5: Copy the files from the "Crack" folder into your Civilization IV installation folder (by default "C:Program FilesFiraxis GamesSid Meier's Civilization 4"), overwriting the files there having the same names:
a) "Civilization4.exe" to "[Civilization IV installation folder]"
b) "Civ4Warlords.exe" to "[Civilization IV installation folder]Warlords"
c) "Civ4BeyondSword.exe" to "[Civilization IV installation folder]Beyond the Sword"

Step 6: Play any of the Civilization IV games you desire!

* It is possible to add Extra Programs and Custom Settings that will be automatically implemented after the Windows XP installation is finished by editing the setting files (Open with notepad) in "(source)OEMRunOnce" folder. After the file "Auto Setup.bat" has been run the Config files can then be also found in "(System Drive)Documents and SettingsCustom Settings" folder. If a settings file has been edited then the file must be run and the Computer must be restarted for the changes to take effect.
* If you try to install Windows XP and your Hard Disk Drive doesn't get detected or you get a Bluescreen after the first Windows XP loading screen then this normally means that the SATA driver for your Hard Disk Drive is missing, these steps here should help you to fix this problem:
1. If you get a Bluescreen then try to disable the SATA/ACHI option or set the SATA mode to IDE in your BIOS. If Windows XP starts now then install your SATA/ACHI driver, restart your Computer and change your BIOS SATA setting back.
2. If you get a Bluescreen or your Hard Disk Drive doesn't get detected, put the SATA driver on a Floppy Disk and use the F6 (Floppy Disk) option that comes up if you have booted Windows XP from the Optical Disc.
3. If you have no Floppy Disk Drive then use nLite at "http://www.nliteos.com" to integrate your SATA Driver directly into the Windows XP source. For more infos how to do this take a look at "http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml".
* If you want to be sure if the integrated SATA driver work with your Computer then use the Program VirtualBox to test it at "http://www.virtualbox.org" and set the Virtual Hard Disk Drive in VirtualBox form IDE to SATA and VirtualBox will then clone your SATA Controller.

* Minimum System Requirements is 600 MHz Processor, 256 MB RAM, 4 GB Hard Disk Space, Super VGA (800x600) Video Adapter.
* Quick Guide how to install Windows XP new:

<- Step 1 Prepare ->

1. BACKUP YOUR FILES and download all the up-to-date Drivers for your Computer.
2. Select the option in your Burn Program for Burning an Image file, and then select the .iso file you want to Burn and Burn the Disc at a slow speed to avoid missing file errors when Windows XP gets installed. If you need a good Burn Program i recommend the free CDBurnerXP at "http://cdburnerxp.se/help/Data/burn-iso".
3. Go to your Mainboard or Computer manufacturer Website and look if there is a new BIOS update or an extra BIOS for Windows XP, if there is then update it. (This step can be skipped but is not recommended.)

4. Put your burned Windows XP Disc in your Optical Disc Drive and then turn your Computer off.
5. Start your Computer and in a few seconds you should see the text "Press any Key to boot from the CD." if you see this then you should press a Key on your Keyboard. If you don't get this message then you must set in your BIOS so that the Optical Disc Drive is the first BOOT device and your Hard Disk the second BOOT device.
6. Wait until Windows XP has loaded the drivers then press the "ENTER" Key on your Keyboard and then the "F8" Key and then the "ESC" Key.
7. Now select the Hard Disk Drive where you want to install Windows XP (Default is "C:") and press the Key "D" on your Keyboard and then the Key "ENTER" and then the Key "L".
8. Now select the same Hard Disk Drive again and press the Key "ENTER" on your Keyboard and now select the option "Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick)" and then press the "ENTER" Key.

9. If Windows XP is installed go to "START -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options" and click all the options you can find there and change all Regional and Language settings to your Regional and Language you want to use.
10. Now you need only to install your up-to-date Computer Drivers and you are DONE :) If you can't find all the up-to-date drivers for your Computer then use the Program DriverMax at "http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax".
* If you are missing Programs like Microsoft Paint or Microsoft Outlook then take a look in the Favorites folder. There you will find Website Links to better Programs and a lot more.
* To change the Windows XP Key after Windows XP is installed use the tool "Keyfinder v1.51.exe" in the "(Optical Disc)KEY CHANGER" folder. You can also change owner and company with "Keyfinder v1.51.exe".
* If you get a virus warning about the file "Keyfinder v1.51.exe" this is normal because all AntiVirus Programs are detecting Key Changers (Hack Tools) as a virus.
* If you have a question or a problem use Google or go to this Windows Support Forum "http://www.msfn.org". But don't expect that someone will help you, if your question or solution can be found in 10 minutes in Google or over the forum search option.

The latest incarnation of Sonyâs PC-based audio editing software, Sound Forge, has been released, strengthening its powerful feature set. Unlike a DAW â" which is designed for multitrack editing â" Sound Forge aids the user in fine-tuning individual audio files to purpose; for example, EQâing a song before cutting to vinyl. This update contains some interesting new features, as well as a few more practical ones.

Sony had already made themselves a strong ally for their v9 release in the form of Izotope, the creators of the well-recieved Ozone 4 (reviewed SOS July 2009) mastering suite. Sound Forge 10 includes Izotopeâs SRC sample-rate conversion and MBIT+ dithering systems, as well as a stripped-down version of all six parts of Ozone 4 (there were only four Izotope plug-ins in Sound Forge 9). Also new to the package is DAO (disc-at-once) burning, allowing the user to create a Red Book-compliant standard audio CD without using separate CD editing and burning software. The inclusion of these processors and tools, in an already solid piece of editing software, makes Sound Forge an attractive option for anyone wanting to master their own material on a relatively tight budget.

Support for several instrument file-formats has also been added, with DLS, Soundfont 2 and Gigastudio formats now editable. Anyone using these formats can alter individual parts of a patch and re-save it without any format conversion. Other new features include a Direct X release of the Zplane Elastique Pro time-stretch algorithm, as well as GUI updates. These include tabbed file browsing, window docks (which appear to be similar in function to those in Adobeâs Creative Suite), and savable layouts, all of which should make working with all of the new tools a little easier on the eye.
